One of the keys to the future success of your ministry is establishing and implementing a systematic process for training all your staff and volunteers. The primary responsibility for staff training rests on the leadership of the local Teen Challenge center.
Global Teen Challenge sees its role as assisting your center in providing training materials which you can download from this website. We are also available to consult with you on this subject as you set up the staff training schedule for your center.
We recommend you have at least 3 parts to your staff training at your center.
1. New Staff Orientation. We highly recommend that your staff training schedule include a series of trainings for every new staff that comes to work at your center. We have provided a recommended list of courses that could be included as part of this new staff orientation. Click here for the detailed list.
2. Specific job training. We recommend that you set up a staff training schedule for each staff, based on their area of work within your center. We have provided recommendations for several different types of staff. Click here for listings.
3. On-going staff training. We recommend that you set up a staff training schedule for regular on-going training for all your staff. This should be provided at a minimum one time per month. This is not just for new staff, but for all staff. Click here for a suggested list of courses to use for on-going training.
4. Optional—university training and degrees for your staff. Global Teen Challenge does not offer college or university credit for its staff training courses. However, Global TC is partnering with Global University which does offer accredited degrees both at the BA level and the Masters level. Keep your staff training balanced
Developing a comprehensive staff training program for your center will take time and work. This training needs to be more than just an academic activity—your staff need to apply these teachings in their daily work and improve their effectiveness.
We recommend that you keep in mind three major areas as you develop your staff training program. All three of these are equally important.
1. Job skills. Many of the skills needed to be an effective staff at Teen Challenge will be learned “on-the-job,” not simply by reading a book. There are many different skills needed depending on the job responsibilities of each staff.
2. Personal character issues. Job skills are not enough to be a successful staff in Teen Challenge. It is absolutely essential that each staff also have a deep personal commitment in their relationship with Jesus Christ, and be seeking to live out on a daily basis the character of Christ in all their daily activities.
3. Leadership skills. Teen Challenge needs leaders, and in one sense every staff is a leader. We need staff who understand biblically based leadership principles and are capable of implementing these in their daily work. We need to lead like Jesus.
As you plan your staff training, keep all three of these in mind and strive for a balance that assures that your staff are growing in all three of these areas of their life.
Document your staff training
Your center needs to have a system for all staff training to be documented. We recommend that you include the following:
1. Set up a schedule for each staff to record the dates and training completed, and the number of hours involved. This can be a paper document or on computer.
2. The training needs to be verified by another person. This could be a staff who oversees the whole staff training for the center, or it could be the supervisor of that staff. We also highly recommend you establish a mentor relationship so that your staff can regularly meet with a mentor to assist them in their growth, both personally and professionally.
3. This documentation should include training required by your center as well as other training the staff completes on his or her own—whether it be college classes or training provided at their church or other community settings.
4. Recognize the achievements of your staff by providing them with certificates when they have completed their training. The certificate should be issued by your center or whoever conducted the training.
5. Have an annual minimum requirement for training for each staff. This record of completed training could also be used as part of your annual review of each staff.
